Walton County History
Georgia's 46th county, Walton County, was named for George Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, former governor of Georgia and US Senator. Comprising 329 square miles, it was created in 1818 from land held by the Cherokee and Creek Indians. There are 7 incorporated cities within Walton County - Between, Good Hope, Jersey, Loganville, Monroe, Social Circle and Walnut Grove. The county seat is Monroe.
Walton County has been the birth place and/or home to seven Georgia governors – James Boynton, Howell Cobb, Alfred Colquitt, Wilson Lumpkin, Henry McDaniel, Richard Russell, Jr. and Clifford Walker.
